The Musings Of An Opinionated Sod [Help Me Grow!]

When Meetings End Up Feeling Like This …

We have all had bad pitch meetings.

When things don’t just go wrong, but go terribly.

Politics.

Bad attitudes.

Going on too long.

Terrible work.

Great work they think is terrible.

Stand-up rows.

Professional fails.

Arrogance and abuse.

Lack of response.

Stupidity.

But the next time it happens – however angry, sad, pissed off it may makes you feel – look at this video and remember, it could have been so much worse. It could be Kylie bad.

You’re welcome.

Wow. Just wow.

Now I understand “I should be so lucky” was ironic.

Do you know the history of that song?
The producers (Stock, Aitken & Waterman) forgot she was coming in to record a song. They knew nothing about her except she was a soap star and pretty so they wrote that song in 40 minutes based on the belief that if she was lucky in life, she couldn’t be lucky in love. Ironically, it seems they were right.

I am sad and impressed you know that.

Comment by Bazza

you truly are a sad fuck campbell.

This is not a video of a singer performing to a rude and uninterested audience. This is a video how women have been controlled by senior men in business.

You’re right. The music and film industries are the worst. Any success let management believe they geniuses so artists do what they’re told thinking they are working with people who have a plan. Problem is they’re just working with people who have an enormous ego. It’s why whenever an artist fails they are blamed for their situation and dropped without any hesitation.

The audience were right wing, Spanish politicians who were holding a conference to discuss party policies. Which makes Kylie’s appearance there even more bizarre. I would guess it was her management team owning someone a favour which means they didn’t care about Kylie, just themselves. Which links to Rob’s bad management post because this must have destroyed Kylie.

Comment by Pete

Yep. You’re right Mary. Though music bosses would claim they have never made decisions based on gender – which is obviously bollocks – even though they’ll point to the amount of young male bands/singers they have also abused and destroyed in the interests of their own self preservation/success. As they say, power corrupt and you don’t have to look far to ass how true that can be.

I have newfound respect for Kylie and a new level of hatred for the people who told her this would be a good for her career.

This is an appropriately timed post. Aren’t you presenting with Bob Greenberg today? I wonder if he will have the look of the audience from this video as he watches you present in your best Kylie style. With swearing instead of dancing. Hopefully.

Comment by George

Yep. This video has prepared me well for everyone’s reaction to me being on stage with our founder. I’m expecting the same look I got when I was with Mr Wieden. Both from the audience and the legend himself. Haha.

Only a matter of time:

How are you not fired? How do you get away with this stuff?

Comment by DH

Maybe, just maybe, she was performing for the huge TV audience that would have accompanied a right-wing political debate in 90s Spain.

Comment by John

Despite the awfulness of the audience, the stand-out thing for me in that video is Kylie; consistently brilliant from start to finish. She was the most powerful person in that room; not giving them the pleasure of letting their behaviour get to her – a consummate professional to the very end.

Comment by Oli

I hope at the very least she fired her management team immediately after the performance.

Comment by George

we never fired campbell and he put us in messes that make this shit like the an army research lab of a deadly fucking diseases.

Comment by andy@cynic

Comment of the day goes to Andy.

Comment by DH

before you piss on kylie campbell, consider this. she faces all this shit and she performs flawlessly. you could have a fucking audience of campbell fan club robots and it still would look like charlie sheen after an all night fucking booze bender.

Comment by andy@cynic

You don’t have to tell me that. I know.

Comment by Rob

That would be an even smaller audience.
