OK, maybe it’s the fact I am jetlagged to hell – but this made me laugh.  Alot.

What I really love about Shanghai is that you really feel it is a city with a ‘development speed’ set on TURBO.

Sure, there’s alot of countries – especially in Asia – that are like that, but here, it’s done on such a big scale that you really feel you are in the middle of an Industrial Hurricane.

The other thing I love is that so many of the skyscrapers have been created with flair – far more than you tend to get in many developed Western markets – at least where modern buildings are concerned.

Because the modern and historical buildings clash so wildly, it creates a skyline that is actually ‘interesting’.

Unfortunately, where ‘interiors’ are concerned, often, things goes downhill fast.  Below is the ‘lovely’ beige colour scheme of the Westin Shanghai.  Lovely eh …

Apart from the fact everything sort of blends into eachother [so you can’t see the door to your room, ha] … it somehow gives the impression that the entire floor is being renovated when in fact, it is the result of a massive overhaul.

OK, so once you get into your room, it’s really very, very nice – but for all the flair and pragmatism of the outside architecture, it’s just a shame so many buildings screw it up with their interiors.

[Though it probably keeps the Western businessman feeling ‘comfortable’, because they are in surroundings that are like the bland rubbish they inhabit at ‘home’]

To be fair, China is still ‘waking up to this sort of thing’ … and given their speed of development is so fast, I am sure that by the time I’m back there in a few weeks, they’ll have ‘evolved’ to leading the World with their interior flair and imagination.

So I was passing a sports store, and I saw this punch bag with the sign … “PLEASE DON’T PUNCH” placed upon it.  Classic.

Surely the obvious thing to do would be to encourage passer-by’s to ‘have a hit’ … because after a really good punch and a kick, I’m sure many would realise it gives them a real sense of ‘release’ [from life’s stresses and frustrations] – possibly resulting in more of them actually deciding to buy the bag than the shop could/would otherwise attract.

Hell, if I was going to put any sign on the thing, it’d be ‘ANTIDOTE TO LIFE’S CRAP BITS … FREE SAMPLE’!!!

I’m going to get one put in all the offices – even though I’ll probably find a picture of my face plastered on all of them!

USA                                                               Australia

Similar light …

Similar architecture … Similar attitudes …

Similar goals …

Similar government …

Similar style of English …

Similar self importance …

Similar divide between rich and poor …

Both Australia and America are wonderful, beautiful and exciting countries – it’s just a shame the similarities tend to be the elements which should be kept as far apart from eachother as possible.

Congratulations Australia … you really seem to be achieving your goal of becoming America’s 51st state … stop now, before it’s too late!

You were the poshest sounding, cleverest thinking, food lovin’, Guinness suppin’, dry humoured, Everton supporting, Scouse Ad Planner that I ever knew …

Despite always speaking in your trademark dour tone … you had a pair of the brightest and most mischievious eyes I’d ever seen and I loved how every now and then, your calm exterior would give way to a wry chuckle – mainly when you realised your good natured evil-streak’ had been exposed.

I’ll never forget that afternoon tea we had in The Rocks, Sydney – where you told me how you had been sarcastic, cheeky and cutting to the Saatchi CD [about Lexus or Olympus, I can’t remember] and yet he still thought you were being supportive, warm and friendly. The giggle [and yes, it was a giggle] was infectious!

It should never of happened – you were way too young – but at least you are free again, and you absolutely deserve to be.

See you around mate … the World’s a crappier place without you! [Go on, admit it – you love the fact I’ve said that don’t you!!]
