The Musings Of An Opinionated Sod [Help Me Grow!]

Disconnecting People …

It’s the day that the expected iPhone 5 is to be announced.

Around the World, people are staring at their computer screens for a glimpse of the new messiah, tweeting endlessly about what features they think will be on the new messiah and talking ad nauseum about what they’re going to do when they get their hands on the new messiah.

All this hype for a mobile phone must be sickening for brands like NOKIA, Samsung, Motorola and SONY Ericsson – once the undisputed kings of the technology.

“How can we upset Apple’s applecart?” whispers one PR individual at NOKIA HQ.

“I know …” screams another, “… let’s fill social media with something interesting about us, something that will grab people’s attention and see us as the originators … the innovators … the driving force behind the entire industry”.

Which is possibly why, mere hours before Apple were going to underwhelm the World with their 4S, I spotted this tweet from Nokia:

And there – in just 11 words – explains NOKIA’s fall from grace.

Irrelevance. Bad timing. Self delusion. Lost opportunities.

I loved NOKIA.

Hell, in some ways I still do.

NOKIA was my first mobile phone.

And my second.

And my third.

I once waited outside DIXONS electronic store to buy their first ‘style’ phone, the 2110.

Yes, even then I was a sad electronics bastard.

Based on their mantra of ‘human technology’ – they were genuine innovators.

Voicemail.
Profile Settings.
Send/Receive Emails.

… and that’s before you even get to their simple to use/understand navigation settings and accessories.

Simple. Meaningful. Effective.

How tragic that their modern history sees them resorting to either executing embarrassing PR stunts … stunts that highlight how off the mark the brands has now become … or putting out press/tweet releases at the most pointless times ever.

At a time where they should be keeping their head down and making something awesome, they are making pointless attacks on the very competition they should now be learning from.

That was why I was so impressed when I read their new CEO’s attack on the companies lethargy to innovate meaningful products.

He could see the issues … he could address the elephant in the room … he could make the changes that could make the changes.

At present it’s too early to see what will happen to this once proud beast.

Early signs are mixed, but overall more positive than they’ve been in a long time … and I hope it continues, because while their current situation makes a great case study on how even the biggest brands can be brought to their knees through blindness and arrogance, the fact is at their best, NOKIA totally ‘get it’ and if they were to recapture this spirit, then Apple would have the competition they need to really push their potential as opposed to following their current strategy of prettying-up existing tech, giving it a cool name and selling it as cutting-edge innovation.

We can hope.

The fall of nokia is amazing but their attitude towards the iphone is only one example of their arrogance towards their competition. Before apple had even considered going in to the phone business, nokia were showing their blind arrogance by their refusal to make flip phones even though they were the preferred form factor in Asia. This decision saw them open the door to Motorola and Samsung who quickly made inroads with their products.

Nokia are still #1 overall but the fact they launch their best smartphone attempt with a soon to be retired software shows they don’t get it and only have history books to look forward to.

I know W+K used to work with them, but you never had a chance to make them great again. Maybe if they’d handed r&d over to you it might have improved but that would never happen because they don’t appreciate the world has moved on from the mid 90’s and they don’t want to make what people really want without a struggle.

Great post Rob, enjoyed reading this very much.

Just once could you write a comment that isn’t sensible or relevant and has some swearing in it. We need proof you’re not a robot.

Comment by Billy Whizz

“Fuck off.”

I am always MIA if it means Man In Action.

Comment by Billy Whizz

if it was mia, it would stand for fucking muppet in action so be fucking glad with corporal.

Comment by andy@cynic

I like the overview Pete … almost as much as I like the mini ‘violate Pete’ intervention.

You’re right as usual, Nokia’s arrogance about touchscreen phones – and Apple in particular – was not the first time they showed their blindness, but then when you’re #1 by a country mile, it’s probably easy to think everything you touch will turn to gold.

Maybe that’s why I liked their new CEO’s rant … because the other weird thing about corporations these days is that even when it becomes obvious all they touch actually turns to shit, they still act as if they’re gods gift to everything whereas this guy openly admitted the issues which – at least to me – is the first step to solving them.

He has a long way and a lot of issues to go though.

True true, see what Samsung did? very similar & in very poor taste with the $2 Samsung Galaxy S2 available outside the apple store in sydney every morning leading up to the launch.

If you sell your piece of electro junk for $2 then why the fuck are you charging me $750 at other outlets????

They also swamped twitter with posts about why samsung is better etc…

These tactics devalued their product in my eyes a massive amount, who actually thought that it wouldn’t?

Comment by Josh Reeve (@jgcreeve)

Could you teach Pete how to make proper comments without being boring?

Comment by Billy Whizz

Is that what Samsung did? It’s not just stupid for the reason you raise, it’s stupid because $2 is so low that the purchase can be made without forming any emotional or financial commitment to the device. Charging $100 would have been more effective for them than $2. What has happened to the handset makers brains? If their pricing and marketing policies are this stupid, it’s no surprise the products are so bad.

Comment by Pete

I know! Not too mention that they were pitching to die hard fanboys camped outside apple waiting for the first phones to arrive. They got a little publicity but it was all gimmicky.

I have talked to a few in the handset arena and they are shit scared of the market leader, they all look up to compare themselves and even avoid saying their name like it’s Voldermort from the Potter series.

Comment by Josh Reeve (@jgcreeve)

Hello Josh – nice to have you pop by. Hope it’s not a one off. Sadly I’m not shocked at Samsung’s actions. If it was 5 years ago I would be … because that’s when they weren’t launching a product-a-week, all filled with everything including the kitchen sink … but nowadays, they come across as a brand who is floundering, a bit like a guy who wants to convince a girl to go out with him by throwing as many reasons as he can why she should change her mind except he doesn’t realise she doesn’t go out with ugly bastards who don’t do things that make her feel better about herself.

Crap analogy, but I understand it. Ha.

Comment by Rob

id rather have fucking syphilis than a samsung anyfuckingthing.

What this post has taught me is you were a sad gadget/tech boy even before gadget/tech did anything remotely interesting.

Comment by DH

you didnt realise he was a sad fuck from birth? shame on you dave.

Comment by andy@cynic

Strangely/scarily I agree with every word you’ve said though.

Comment by DH

Who are you? What have you done with Dave?

Comment by Rob

You knew nokia were in trouble when the best PR stories they got in the last few years were the “world first” ads you guys did for them. Did nothing to sell the brand or the phone but got them more positive press than every phone they’ve launched in the last 5 years combined.

Comment by Pete

Ahhhh yes. Well to be fair, we did try and offer them advice from a hardware point-of-view but they – quite reasonably – said “what would you know?” even though it would appear judging by their current product range, we’d know a lot more than they do.

Comment by Rob

dont tell me campbell, you said they should make a nokia car.

Comment by andy@cynic

Second comment of the week.

Comment by Billy Whizz

I don’t know why you keep saying this. I’ve only said it once and that was a moped not a car and that ended up happening and they made money out of it. Not much money, but some, which is more than NOKIA have managed to do for a few years now. Mind you, if you were to say I always suggested something revolving around architecture you might have a point.

Comment by Rob

what the fuck? 31 comments? on this shit? about those finnish twats. finnish is the right fucking word for them as well. dead.

Comment by andy@cynic

Did you work on Nokia Robert? Strikes me they needed you.

Comment by George

you mean to push them over the fucking cliff to the jagged rocks below?

Comment by andy@cynic

No I didn’t George which, according to Andy, is probably why they are still a functioning business. Albeit functioning in a way that would make the Osbournes look like they are the most efficient, effective and functional unit alive.

Comment by Rob

nokia and w+k arent so fucking stupid after all.

Comment by andy@cynic

Now that is one hell of a back-handed compliment. Congrats … you’re in a league of your own.

Comment by Rob

They missed out on street interviews with hookers though.

Comment by northern

funny you should fucking say that groper. guess where the dirty fucker is now. yes, paying women of ill fucking repute to talk to him. at least hes not giving me the fucking expenses to fucking sign off anymore.

Comment by andy@cynic

Tell me you’re joking. Does Dan know?

Comment by northern

fuck knows if he knows but hes goin to be fucking paying for it.

Comment by andy@cynic

Nokia got into a rut of releasing ugly products, and they helped birth Symbian which was so evil even the devil would condemn it.

Now they have a chance to find what they are again. I hope they take it.

Comment by Rob Mortimer

I worked on Nokia at W+K, hell I was even made redundant when Dan decided to give them the boot. Believe me when I say that this is totally non-biased, but that company is completely fucked.

They are arrogant, stupid and completely overblown beyond their means. The amount of people chipping in opinon – most of them technical designers incapable of feeling anything resembling consumer insight – completely handicaps any meaninful innovation. It’s an absolute mess.

You can see it in their 100+ products, none of which come close to anything you’d rather have.

Their shit strategy was to throw their weight around and put all of their eggs into securing easy money in emerging markets, ignoring what Apple and Google were doing where the real money was, and then ignoring what the pirates and cheap manufacturers were doing to undercut them.

Now they’re completey fucked.

My first phone was a Nokia too, but that doesnt mean shit to me in 2011. A phone is a badge of honor and there is nothing cool about a phone that doesn’t even have a proper Facebook app. I’m hoping someone finally flushes the toilet Nokia has been sitting in for the last few years. In my eyes, they deserve it. Harsh but thats the nature of business, particular technology.

Comment by Age

Nokias phones LOOK like they are designed by commitee, with no thought for their real use.

I owned two Nokia’s back in the day, but now I wouldn’t touch one with a bargepole.

Comment by Rob Mortimer

Clarify – I wouldn’t touch any of their current phones. I still hope they can rediscover the smartness that made them THE mobile brand a decade ago.

Comment by Rob Mortimer

of course theyre fucked, they hired campbell.

oh you mean those fuckers at nokia. them fucking too.

Comment by andy@cynic

you work for some toy company bastard now dont you? basically like advertising but with some commercial fucking sense.
