Yep I’m back.

And yep, I ate more Din Tai Dumplngs than the population of China.

And it was worth every fucking mouthful.

Now I could use today to write about the country I love more than anywhere else I’ve lived. But I won’t.

Not simply because I’ve done that a lot, but because I pre-wrote this post a month ago and don’t want it to go to waste – hahaha.

So with that, let’s get on with things shall we?

I’ve always had a strong sense of fairness.

By that I mean the belief everyone deserves the right to opportunity, regardless of heritage, geography or wealth.

Of course I appreciate this is an unrealistic ideal – there’s too many contexts, variables, and horrible realities to contend with for it to ever stand a chance of becoming real – however if you had parents like mine, then you would know it is completely futile to have any other ambition or opinion, however much you may try.

Now I totally get working in advertising makes the above statement sound ridiculous – and maybe it is – however I’ve always seen my role as representing the interests of the people before I represent the needs of my clients. I should point out this is not – contrary to popular belief – that I’m a maniac, but because I’ve always believed those who do right by the people, even if that is as simple as understanding who they are and what’s actually going on in their life – are more likely to be rewarded with their time, energy and consideration.

But I recently came across a letter [albeit one written many years ago] that has made me think I may be wrong.

Well, not wrong exactly … but too black and white in my perspective.

On one hand, I think the minimum wage should be the minimum wage for every person – regardless of situation or condition.

On the other, I totally understand what Candice Baxter is saying.

Because while her idea may not be ‘fair’ in terms of hourly rate, it may create the right amount of unfairness that allows certain groups of people to have a chance of experiencing a life they may otherwise never stand a chance of having.

Given my Dad specialised in Human Rights and my Mum was such a passionate advocate for those who felt helpless, I’m so ashamed of my blindness to this situation, while also being so grateful to Candice for her education and so hopeful that her daughter found fulfillment in whatever she chose to do.
