The Musings Of An Opinionated Sod [Help Me Grow!]

If Something Is Worth Doing, It’s Worth Overdoing …

A while back I got to interview Roy Thomas Baker.

Roy is a music producer and has worked with everyone from Queen to Muse to Bowie.

In fact he was the producer behind Bohemian Rhapsody … so obviously this was a huge thrill for me but he surpassed even my wildest expectations.

He’s flamboyant. Opinionated. Outspoken. Outrageous.

He’s more of a rockstar than most modern rockstars.

But what I loved most was when I asked about his style of production – which is well known for being grandiose – to which he replied with the quote above.

Which I bloody love.

I love it for its ridiculousness, insightfulness and self-awareness … but what I also love is that he has described how certain brands – especially in fashion – have created an energy around them that is attracting and creating culture rather than trying to endlessly chase it down.

If you look at brands like Gentle Monster, Gucci and Supreme – they’ve all mastered the art of going just far enough.

In a world of accuracy, precision and logic, this is not just the perfect antidote, it’s arguably the most effective way to be effective … though I accept that may say far more about the indifference the majority of brands create in our world than the magic these brands embody.

For all the processes, play books, ecosystems and god knows what else our industry likes to promote … maybe we could all learn a thing from Mr Roy Thomas Baker in terms of how to make people actually give a shit.

What a fascinating individual RTB appears to be. His quote is the most interesting I’ve heard in a long time.

He’s an absolute legend for every delightfully offensive reason. Hahaha.

Mr Thomas-Baker is an exceptional producer and an unique character. This post captures his genius eccentricity perfectly.

He also has a good line about “apparent volume, as opposed to actual volume”
