Of course if you have too much of it – for too long – then that’s not good, but I’d rather feel stressed about what I’m doing than have a casual attitude towards it because the older I get, the more I realise the things that define us aren’t qualifications, possessions or job titles but the standards we work to and will fight for.

The nike ad they never ran?
It’s a great point and highlights the difference between the raving of egomaniacs and those who care about getting things right. I’ll be borrowing this Rob.
Comment by Pete April 15, 2013 @ 6:25 amIs that the difference? Those who want to do it right for themselves versus those who want to get it right for others?
Comment by Pete April 15, 2013 @ 6:26 amDon’t want to get too mcuh into semantics because I basically agree with you. Stress and cortisol are never good for you, but they don’t have tobe the alternative to selling yourself short by being overly casual.
In fact, I’d argue that knowing what matters allows you to avoid stress and focus your efforts in a controlled way.
Comment by John April 15, 2013 @ 6:29 amIn case you hadn’t noticed John, Rob works in advertising, not the army.
Comment by DH April 15, 2013 @ 6:42 amGood point, I’d overlooked the stress of all that holiday planning.
Comment by John April 15, 2013 @ 7:11 amGuess what, I go on another one in 2 weeks.
Thought that would make you sick.
Comment by Rob April 15, 2013 @ 8:17 amPressure creates diamonds, Stess creates heart attacks.
Comment by John April 15, 2013 @ 6:33 amSounding more like a planner every day John. That’s meant as a compliment despite how you may interpret it.
Comment by Pete April 15, 2013 @ 6:38 amSo would the statement above be better if it said:
“Pressure is caused by giving a fuck”?
I’m so confused right now.
Comment by Pete April 15, 2013 @ 6:40 amChill Pete, this isn’t important enough to give a fuck about.
Comment by DH April 15, 2013 @ 6:41 amIf it’s pressure you put on yourself then sure. Trouble is (as you pointed out above) pressure’s also caused by moving goalposts and political nonsense.
Found two interesting quotes that make it even more confusing.
“Nobody works better under pressure. They just work faster.”
“Pressure is a word that is misused in our vocabulary. When you start thinking of pressure, it’s because you’ve started to think of failure.”
Comment by John April 15, 2013 @ 6:50 amI thibnk Dave’s nailed it.
Comment by John April 15, 2013 @ 6:50 amIs this statement from the wastebasket of nike or no fear?
Comment by DH April 15, 2013 @ 6:43 amPete, John. Stop with the analyzing and accept the statement for what it is. Pressure or stress, doing or giving, I know it matters but it also doesn’t, it’s a good point and we need as many of those on here as we can get.
Comment by Bazza April 15, 2013 @ 6:51 amI’m with Baz, sometimes our desire to analyse meaning ends up destroying its meaning. Regardless of whether there is a better word to use than “stress”, I get the point Robert is making, as I’m sure everyone does because it’s a good one.
Comment by George April 15, 2013 @ 7:03 amAs an aside, the quote John wrote in his comment, “When you start thinking of pressure, it’s because you’ve started to think of failure” is pure Nike, so I expect to see that in a campaign in the near future. The other, “Nobody works better under pressure. They just work faster”, will be used by me on a daily basis.
Good post, comments, quotes and lessons.
Well that’s going to make me even more popular with your underlings.
As for the other quote, you’re right about Nike because it was said by Tommy Lasorda.
Comment by John April 15, 2013 @ 7:07 amBaz. George. You’re a disgrace to your planning peers. Congratulations.
Comment by DH April 15, 2013 @ 7:10 amThank you George. Funnily enough, I’ve written a post about this very subject [using Kevin Roberts as inspiration, no less] for later in the week. Or next. I can’t remember.
And yes, I do pre-write my posts that far in advance!
[Don’t tell Dan!]
Comment by Rob April 15, 2013 @ 8:18 amThat’s because you don’t do any work.
Comment by Billy Whizz April 15, 2013 @ 8:30 amWhat the fuck do you know about stress or pressure Rob? You’ll be writing about fashion and music next.
Comment by Billy Whizz April 15, 2013 @ 7:54 amOf course Pete & John have now basically ensured I’ll be spending the day trying to work out just what I meant and whether ‘stress’ is the right – or wrong – word.
So when I get asked by accounts why my timesheet has a big fat zero on it, you’ll know who I’ll be blaming.
Comment by Rob April 15, 2013 @ 8:16 amfucking hell campbell, youre turning into the sort of yoda statement producing fuck that you used to hate. and for the record, stress is caused by fucking planners. enough said.
Comment by andy@cynic April 15, 2013 @ 9:10 ambut youre right about what we should be valued by rather than fucking titles and shit. what a shame the person who wrote this has more fucking material shit and a history of more wanky job titles than pretty much every other fuck on the planet put together. love you. ab
Comment by andy@cynic April 15, 2013 @ 9:12 amI’ve always said society are hypocritical … and I fully accept I’m more hypocritical than most. The positive of admitting that is that it means I’m saying I’m a member of humanity, which is probably something that is far more offensive to you than my planning.
Comment by Rob April 15, 2013 @ 12:21 pmI quite like the right kind of stress.
Comment by Marcus April 15, 2013 @ 3:49 pmStress comes from realising few share – or want to understand your standards
Comment by northern April 15, 2013 @ 4:38 pmI don’t know how people do this job without caring. Oh yes I do, they just care about the wrong stuff, like showing it was done be media arts, it went through LINK
They care about not being sacked, not doing something that could make a difference. They are the worst sort of colleague and client in my mind.
Comment by Rob April 15, 2013 @ 4:54 pm“In my experience, it’s not a case of you deciding when you want to leave a company, it’s when a company decides they want you to leave. I never take my position for granted – that might represent insecurity, but to me, it drives my standards and ambitions.” Rob Campbell
Comment by northern April 16, 2013 @ 8:48 pmI’m not sure if you have quoted Rob for good or bad reasons because I like what he says in his comment and in his opinion on what maintains high standards. Please put me out of my misery and let me know.
Comment by Pete April 17, 2013 @ 12:30 amI was being naughty, as he was having a go at folks who only care about not getting sacked – when he’s said elsewhere he’s afraid of getting sacked.
Comment by northern April 17, 2013 @ 1:03 amWhich I should leave to the likes of Dodds
Of course he doesn’r really mean that,he means that unlike many others, he appreciates where he’s got and knows the key to staying there is always working to high standards rather than playing the game. That’s why he’s great.
i appreciated the fucking attempt at mischief groper. youre better off leaving that shit to me or doddsy, you stick to pissing on media arts and queen.
Comment by andy@cynic April 17, 2013 @ 5:41 amI don’t understand why some people are saying the statement sounds like a Nike ad because anyone who has worked with him for more than a day would know this is pure Robert Campbell.
I like this Robert. Of course there needs to be caveats around the reasons, duration and purpose behind the stress, but I like the way you have reframed it to be about caring rather than coping.
