The Musings Of An Opinionated Sod [Help Me Grow!]

Arrogance Is Far More Dangerous Than Stupidity …

So a while back I wrote about a big meeting I’d had with a client in Australia.

I don’t think it takes a Rocket Scientist to work out who I was talking about, but after weeks and weeks of waiting, we’ve finally got the news we’ve been waiting on.

We’ve been fired.

Despite it not being totally unexpected, we’re obviously totally and utterly gutted [especially for the brilliant team who worked their hearts out to create something we were all very proud of] however when a company you’re associated with decides to sue the client both personally and corporately [allegedly issuing new legal action the Thursday before the main meeting!] then it’s always going to be abit of an uphill struggle.

[Bit of an understatement that last bit!]

I can’t go into specifics because I’m pissed off, disappointed, frustrated and conscious of legal ramifications [and no, that is not being dramatic] … however in the near future I’ll write about one of the weirdest stories that’s come out of adland and it’ll sadly prove my Dad was right – advertising IS full of children playing at being adults!

Sorry to hear that you lost your battle. Will we get to see the Stealomatic? The very name excites.

rob, this is nasty. i’m so sorry to hear that it’s all gone pear-shaped, especially because your ex-client really needed you guys to help them out of a disastrous 5-year rut! gutless idiots.

Comment by lauren

remember it was nothing you or the guys did. they loved your work, they loved where you were going to take them, they let you make the first step and its a fucking great step. you were just a pawn in someone elses fucked game. drinks are on their way from all of us over here.
and show the stealo, its fucking astounding or better still, keep it and sell the idea to their main competitor and make them cry about what they couldnt bring themselves to buy.

Comment by andy@cynic

Fuckers. So sorry to hear that Rob. Show the stealo show the stealo show the stealo…

Comment by Angus

At least you lot did nothing wrong. No one can say you were fired for mistakes or lack of quality.

“My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius. Commander of the armies of the north. General of the Felix Legions. Loyal servant of the true emperor Marcus Arelius. Father to a murdered son. Husband to a murdered wife. I will have my vengence. In this life or the next.”

The lunacy of this sorry tale is incredible. In fact, it’s criminal. What exactly was “the company you are associated with” thinking when they sent a team into win this client over? Did they really think it wouldn’t matter that they were suing the client? I mean, for fuck’s sake THEY WERE SUING THE CLIENT.

If “the company you are associated with” is the network that I think it is then it would interest me how much the big boss (see what I did there) knew about this. Frankly any organisation that is willing to waste the time, money and love of their people AND willing to support senior management who action schemes such as this is doomed.

I just wish I could be a fly on the wall when the head of Asia Pacific has to explain his/her P&L.

Comment by Marcus Brown

I look forward to hearing the news behind the news very soon.

So sorry for you Robert, I know how excited you were about this project.

Comment by Lee Hill

it would frighten the fuck out of you marcus if you knew just how stupid and arrogant people were in this whole sorry episode but i dont want to say too much because rob wasnt joking about the potential legal ramifications if he opened his gob too much. at least for the moment.

niko, youre a mad fuck, i like you.

Comment by andy@cynic

Andy, I don’t think I want to know. Considering the mood I’m currently in it would probably push me over the edge.

Sometimes it’s safer being on the outside looking in.

Comment by Marcus Brown

ive heard your “news” so i know why you would say that. its a fucking outrage and all these companies deserve to die or alternatively have rob make them look the bunch of fuckers they are.

Comment by andy@cynic

compared to the news outlined above, my “news” is nothing. And at least I’ve got my shed.

Comment by Marcus Brown

Its just complete madness from start to finish.
As for Marcus getting more bad news, if its what I imagine then thats almost as ridiculous still.

Some companies don’t know a good thing til it’s gone.

Comment by Rob Mortimer

As with Rob’s story, much is hidden. The irony is the series I’m currently writing concerns the company. So watch out for the end of the series… it will have a little twist.

Comment by Marcus Brown

yes the above is sad and bad but its worse for the people rob worked alongside than rob himself. thats not devaluing how fucked it is but your news affects you so as far as i am concerned thats worse, especially the way you were treated. we all need a big fucking drink.

Comment by andy@cynic

Oh that is terrible news Robert. I’m so sorry. We’re in for a very interesting meeting next month aren’t we 🙂
I don’t know what’s happened to you Marcus, but it sounds horrific so I am sorry for whatever has happened.
As my wife say’s, “It’ll all come out in the wash” so expect brighter and happier news very soon, you both deserve it more than most.

Comment by George

that is a fucking good point, george, i cant wait for next month, especially if campbell “broods”.

Comment by andy@cynic

I need a fucking huge drink. I’m going to get plastered and there’s nothing anybody can do to stop me.

Comment by Marcus Brown

stop you? well fucking hold you down and pour it down your dirty little throat.

Comment by andy@cynic

So, back to the matter at hand (Rob’s Post)

Two words: Corporate Governance.

Comment by Marcus Brown

rob – thats such bs. i’m so sorry. yes, sadly 99% of this industry is filled by adults behing like children.
marcus – i don’t know what’s happened but i’m sorry.
let’s hope that karma thing is real.

Comment by gareth

Andy is right, sell the stealo to their competitor and make them bleed.

Comment by pooR\

Interesting.
There is so much legal shit going on here that if you did re-use it for another (appropriate) client any lawsuits would just get tangled as counters to the existing suits.

Besides, you can claim “any exclusivity contracts are voided due to the (insert allegations) of the client”.

The work deserves to be seen.

Comment by Rob Mortimer

Sorry to hear all this Rob, it fucking sucks being tied to childish games you have no control over, especially when it effects what your trying to achieve.

I guess you have no choice but to just chalk it up and move on? Best mate.

Comment by Age

You’re right Age … that’s what we’re going to do but the bit that bothers me is that a bunch of clever, hard working, innocent sods are going to face an uncertain future because supposidly professional corporate institutions like playing ego-games.

Fallout has already started … it makes me sick.

I will show the stealo, just not yet – it’s a sad state of affairs but I do have to be abit mindful of things at the moment – more for other people’s sake than my own.

I cannot tell you how pathetic this whole thing is, and as I said in a previous post, everyone loses, client – agency – industry and consumer.

But it’s not all doom and gloom … well it is in this particular scenario [bar the one ‘bridge’ ad we got to make] … I’ve heard a rumour we might have some good news soon and that warms the cockles of my heart, ha!
