Computer Cats
Quite a while back I wrote a post about how the World Is Going Lazy … which basically went on about how society is losing its ability to ‘compromise’ and is in a constant demand for ‘niche customisation’.
From flowers that don’t smell to oranges that have already been pealed, we are becoming a society of prima-donnas and this trend is likely to continue as marketers see the opportunity to charge huge premiums for items that are actually ‘less’ than they would have been in their original state.
The latest in this advanced-simplification product trend is ALLERCA … a company that produces HYPO-ALLERGENIC CATS!
Now I know some people have allergies to animals so this will allow them to finally own the pet of their dreams … but given this company also talks about its ‘unique socialising program’ [to ensure all cats are sweet and affectionate] it does feel more like some evil corporation of the future [ie: something you’d see in an Arnie movie] than an organisation who has real compassion for animal lovers and animals.
To be honest I don’t know why I am surprised by all this – especially as animals have been bred to achieve a particular look/attitude for centuries – but we’re becoming such a pampered and demanding society, that our ability to appreciate what we’ve got is becoming seriously impacted which will only lead to more outrageous spending as we seek to justify and validate our own value in the World.
Lets get a grip and help those who can’t even afford a Macca’s meal, let alone a generically modified cat!

I can’t wait for them to bring out ready chewed food.
Comment by NP July 12, 2007 @ 2:26 pmI’m a big believer in ‘flow’ being the key to happiness – losing yourself is a task, like gardening. I hate more and more people taking the effort out of things, since the end is never as fun as the start.
You’ve just described is an insight of sheer brilliance – the satisfaction of achievement is based on inconvienience not simplicity … and if we carry on at this rate, we’ll become a society with an inherent sense of disappointment – it’s already starting!
Comment by Rob July 12, 2007 @ 2:45 pmNP and Rob… Both of these comments blew my mind. SO fucking TRUE! I love this blog.
Comment by Age July 12, 2007 @ 2:55 pmLovely post and lovely insight. You and NP should work together 🙂
Comment by Pete July 12, 2007 @ 4:00 pmWhich oddly brings me to a quote that Ben (Noisy Decent Graphics) reminded me of… its from someone I hate with a passion, but the insight is very true:
“Look at a day when you are supremely satisfied at the end. It’s not a day when you lounge around doing nothing; it’s when you’ve had everything to do, and you’ve done it.”
Said by (boo hiss) Margaret Thatcher
Comment by Rob Mortimer July 12, 2007 @ 4:28 pmTo be honest, there are the odd days when I am rather satisfied to have done nothing, but I take your point …
Comment by Rob July 12, 2007 @ 4:35 pmWell of course… but if we stop seeing life as a series of achievements would we get anything done at all?
Comment by Rob Mortimer July 12, 2007 @ 4:47 pmThis is getting far too deep and meaningful for a jetlagged Rob Campbell, hahaha!
Comment by Rob July 12, 2007 @ 6:20 pmStuff insight. My office has been moved. I now work in a fucking shed.
Comment by Marcus July 12, 2007 @ 6:26 pmJust read your comment Pete, I wouldn’t wish it on him – I like him too much!
Comment by Rob July 12, 2007 @ 6:27 pmi love hard work. i could sit and watch people do it for fucking hours. (copyright jerome k jerome except the ”fuck” bit, thats 100% me) 🙂
Comment by andy@cynic July 12, 2007 @ 7:12 pmshed? i fucking love sheds. some people dont know theyre fucking born. just like campbell who claimed his australian holiday was work. oh hang on he didnt did he. bollocks, bang goes the point of this comment. going to eat a sausage sandwich and watch my people sweat and toil.
Comment by andy@cynic July 12, 2007 @ 7:19 pmwell, mister fucking smart arse. Get on a plane, come to Munich AND SWOP with me if you like sheds so much.
Comment by Marcus July 12, 2007 @ 8:01 pmWell thankyou Mr Rob and Mr Age. And Pete, only if I can wear camouflage Birkenstocks too…
Comment by NP July 12, 2007 @ 9:27 pmnobody cares about me and shed.
Comment by Marcus July 12, 2007 @ 9:56 pmI care about you and the shed – though I also support Andy’s comment, Shed’s are cool … but that’s because his shed is where his ‘games room’ is so I am assuming [quite possibly wrongly] that your shed has a pool table, 3 arcade games and a XBox 360/PS3 too.
And NP, I have a load of never-worn Birkies [remember my excess order from Germany] so as long as you’re a size 9 or 10, the job is yours PLUS as we’re [fingers crossed] going to be opening a UK office soon, you’ll never actually have to sit with me. That makes it a win win situation for you isn’t it!?
Comment by Rob @ Cynic July 13, 2007 @ 6:58 amYour assumption is flawed. My office is not in some luxury shed. It’s in a real shed. Woodlice and all.
Comment by Marcus July 13, 2007 @ 2:07 pmWoodlice!!!
You have pets too!
Comment by Rob July 13, 2007 @ 3:31 pmNo, not pets. Ever seen the film “papillon”?
Comment by Marcus July 13, 2007 @ 3:37 pmI AM size 9. Can you get them signed by Bob Geldof?
Comment by NP July 13, 2007 @ 10:56 pmWho the fuck cares about Geldof’s signature, we’ve just had approval to shoot a spot with Jemma Jameson and it ain’t no shoes I want her to sign. Are any of you limey’s not gay?
Comment by Billy Whizz July 13, 2007 @ 11:16 pmIt’s not us ‘Limey’s’ are gay … it’s that you Yanks are a bunch of immature jocks with no taste, subtely or class.
But get a photo or you are dead! 🙂
